Regents Experiential Learning Initiative (RELI)

Program Overview:

The Regents Experiential Learning Initiative (RELI) is offering grants to support educational or experiential programs that significantly advance students' career exploration and preparation. The grant aims to enhance career and professional development competencies, including problem-solving, critical thinking, entrepreneurial, and interpersonal communication skills, preparing students for leadership roles in the workforce.

The RELI program is entering its third year at SCU – in 2024, RELI made total grants of $53,000+ and in 2025, RELI made total grants of $72,000.

Proposal Qualifications:

To be considered for a potential grant, proposals must meet the following criteria:

  • The proposal supports undergraduate educational or experiential activities advancing career exploration.
  • Eligible programs must be sponsored and administered by academic programs, C.S.O., or R.S.O. through a faculty or staff advisor.
  • All staff or faculty with continuing appointments (tenure stream or teaching professor ranks) are eligible to apply. The project must be able to be completed in FY28. Please share your proposal with your supervisor or chair before submitting it. University Relations will require your dean to sign off before an award is conferred. If the project includes research with humans, please remember to apply for IRB approval.
  • If your proposal includes student compensation, please remember that student stipends must be approved by the Student Employment Office and the General Counsel before they are promised to students. The process to get that approval is found here: https://www.scu.edu/finance/controller/forms/. Student assistants should be hired as student employees using the regular hiring process. https://www.scu.edu/hr/student-employment/manager-toolkit/getting-started/.
  • A budget spreadsheet with itemized expenses is required.
  • Grant proposals will be considered for up to $15,000.
  • Participants must be in good academic standing.

Additionally, preference will be given to the proposals that demonstrate the following:

  • Preference will be given to proposals where no other university funding sources are currently available.
  • Preference will be given to proposals that demonstrate a plan to engage with and leverage members of the Board of Regents through mentoring, networking, etc.
  • Preference will be given to proposals that demonstrate a path to sustained program effectiveness for future years (which may involve additional requests for RELI grant funding in future years).

Grant Requirements:

  • Grant recipients will be required to submit impact reports reflecting the use of the grant to the Board of Regents.
  • Grant recipients will be asked to submit regular (e.g., quarterly) updates on the use of the grant and may be invited to address the Board of Regents to receive additional guidance and support.
  • How to Submit:
