  • Kelly Capen Douglas, Esq.

    General Counsel

    Kelly Capen Douglas is the general counsel at Santa Clara University where she serves as the University’s chief legal officer and is responsible for managing and overseeing all legal affairs for the University. Reporting to the president, Kelly works closely and collaboratively with other members of the University’s leadership team, the Board of Trustees, and stakeholders from across the University.

    Prior to joining Santa Clara University in April 2023, Kelly served as the President & CEO of Voices for Children, the nonprofit organization designated by the San Diego and Riverside Superior Courts to recruit and supervise specially-trained community volunteers who advocate for children living in the foster care system. From 2005-2019, Kelly served as the general counsel at the University of San Diego, where she was the university’s first in-house legal counsel and oversaw all legal affairs for the campus. Prior to joining USD, Kelly was a partner at Luce Forward Hamilton & Scripps LLP in San Diego, where she specialized in employment law, served as the leader of the labor and employment law practice group, and was a frequent speaker to various human resources and business organizations.

    Kelly has been an active member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys. She served on NACUA’s Board of Directors from 2011-2014, chaired and served on numerous NACUA committees, and has regularly served as a speaker or moderator for NACUA programs. An engaged community volunteer, Kelly served on the board of directors of various nonprofit organizations, including Goodwill Industries of San Diego County, the National Conflict Resolution Center, and Christ Church Day School. She currently is a trustee at The Bishop’s School in San Diego. Kelly has received various honors for her professional and community contributions, including NACUA’s First Decade Award, Goodwill’s Volunteer of the Year award, and the San Diego Business Journal’s General Counsel of the Year Award.

    Kelly earned her bachelor’s degree in international relations from Stanford University. She received her J.D. degree with high honors from the Duke University School of Law, where she earned membership in the Order of the Coif and was selected as the outstanding woman law graduate. Ms. Douglas and her husband JD have two adult children, Courtney and Collin.

     

  • Kathy Nguyen

    Associate General Counsel

    Kathy Nguyen is the associate general counsel at Santa Clara University where she advises on a wide range of transactional, regulatory, and other legal matters impacting the University.

    Prior to joining the Office of General Counsel in January 2025, Kathy worked in Palo Alto, New York, and Vietnam in private practice with the international law firms of Covington & Burling, Freshfields, and Baker McKenzie, where she advised both U.S. and international clients on strategic transactions in the technology sector and maintained an active pro bono practice. Before her legal career, she worked with the UCLA Honors Program, trained future English teachers in Vietnam through the Fulbright Program, and served in Malaysia with the Sabah Women's Action Resource Group, an NGO dedicated to advocacy, education, and support for
    women and children who are victims of domestic violence. 

    Kathy graduated magna cum laude from UCLA with a bachelor's degree in philosophy, where she was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. She received her J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Carey Law School, where she was the editor-in-chief of the Journal of International Law and received a certificate in management from The Wharton School. Kathy is an active member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) and the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA). She is admitted to practice law in New York and California.

  • Michael Bedolla

    Employment Counsel

    Michael Bedolla, B.A. ’06, J.D. ’14, is the employment counsel at Santa Clara University. He provides legal counsel to the University’s leadership team and the Department of Human Resources regarding various workplace and personnel matters to ensure compliance with California and federal labor and employment laws.

    Prior to joining the University in 2022, Michael was a litigator who represented both private employers and workers across the State of California. He also advised clients regarding various labor and employment matters, including wage-and-hour compliance, employment discrimination, and ERISA. Michael is admitted to appear before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and the United States District Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Central, and Southern Districts of California.

    Michael is an active member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys. He also serves as a Lecturer in Law for the University’s School of Law, where he teaches legal advocacy to second year law students. Michael regularly volunteers as a judge for the University’s Honors Moot Court Internal competition.

    Michael earned his Bachelor of Arts in philosophy from the University in 2006. He also received his J.D. from the University in 2014. As a law student, Michael served as an editor for The Advocate and participated in moot court competitions.

  • Lindsey Kouvaris

    Executive Assistant

    Lindsey Kouvaris ’02 serves as the executive assistant to the Office of the General Counsel and is responsible for providing administrative support to the University’s legal team. 

    A graduate of Santa Clara, Lindsey has a long history with the University. She began her career at SCU in 2009 at the de Saisset Museum, where she served as Assistant Director, Exhibitions and Programs and authored the University’s first iBooks Textbook on the history of Mission Santa Clara, “Moving Forward: Santa Clara’s Story of Transformation.” 

    Following her time at the de Saisset Museum, Lindsey worked in various roles around SCU providing marketing, writing, and editing support for departments including Alumni Relations, University Marketing and Communications, and the College of Arts and Sciences. She joined the Office of the General Counsel in 2026. 

    Lindsey earned her bachelor’s degree in Art History from Santa Clara University and holds a master's in Art History from Southern Methodist University.
